Welcome to our house manual! Here, you will find everything that our past guests have recommended and the little secrets to our wonderful island life!

WELCOME TO CAYO LOCO!

HOUSE RULES

Your comfort is our concern! Door and windows open with fans on is great for taking advantage of the fresh sea air and ocean breezes. You can even sleep with everything open as it is very safe here! We do! But still keep all valuables in your safe. Keep gates closed and latched.

When running the AC, close the door and all windows. Never lower the thermostat below 21C or 70F. If an AC unit freezes or malfunctions due to user negligence, we will immediately call a technician and you will be responsible for the charges. When leaving the house, TURN OFF the AC! Save it for when you need it! Takes 5-10 minutes to cool the house when you return!

IMPORTANT – Cayo Loco has a strict NO SMOKING/2 ADULTS ONLY/NO PETS/NO LOUD MUSIC/NO VISITORS/NO BEACH FIRES or CANDLES AS WE HAVE NO FIRE DEPARTMENT!

Thank you for your compliance! Enjoy your stay!

Good To Know

WHEN you are here

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE HOUSE AND SHOPPING?

YOUR BEACH HOUSE

Computer/ Internet

We have high speed wifi. The library has wifi via cable.

Air Conditioning

Rarely needed due to ocean breezes! Abuse of the AC resulting in excessive usage or damage to the units will result in a surcharge. All windows and the door are to be closed when AC is running. When you leave the house, AC is to be turned off! Should you lower the AC below 21 C or 70 F, the compressor will be damaged. A service technician will be called and you will be responsible for all charges. Our units are highly efficient when run properly!

House Water

MONITOR YOUR USE OF WATER, YOU CAN RUN OUT. It is a very precious commodity on an island. Rain water, you will love it!!

Toilets

Please flush as little as possible! Flush only toilet paper and whatever comes out of your body! We are on septic. NO WIPES IN THE TOILET OF ANY KIND!

Lights/Fans

Fan/light switches – press to turn off/on; toggle to dim!

Drinking Water/Ice

The water from the main faucet is good for everything. For RO drinking water, use the small spicket by the kitchen faucet. Ice in freezer/cold water in frig are RO! No plastic bottles please!

Septic  NO FLUSHABLE WIPES in the toilet please! If there is a strong smell downstairs or the toilet overflows call us or caretakers immediately.

Electricity

Same plugs as US. Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed if the power goes out and your food will last for 24 hours. Yellow solar lites/candles for a power outage and backup power for fans, lites, water. Deck lites are solar. The on/off switch is at the solar panel on your beach stairs.

Refrigerator I leave condiments/spices for your convenience. Ice is RO!

BBQ

Gas! Cleaning utensils by BBQ/personal cooking utensils in your house.

Garbage

Kitchen garbage bags go in the black can at the top of the driveway. Fish cleaning should be done on the beach and all fish remains tied tightly in your kitchen bag and put in the garbage right away. NO LOOSE GARBAGE OR SMALL BAGS IN THE BLACK CAN PLEASE! Glass bottles go next to black garbage can. No plastic/metal recycling, please put in your trash!

Windows

Every window has noseeum screen. Be aware that it rains at a moment’s notice and sideways so when you leave, make sure windows and doors on the breezy side are closed to avoid flooding the house or wetting your bed.

THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW RANDOM NIGHTTIME BREAK- INS on the island, but not at our house. To be extra safe you can lock the deck door and deck windows at NIGHT.  All other windows are too high to reach.  We sleep with ours open! Keep money, jewelry, passports, cash and electronics in the safe.

Beach Towels

PLEASE only take colored beach towels to the beach. Best to hang beach towels/bathing suits around the deck or hooks to dry. Bring in as soon as they are dry due to rain/mist.

Outdoor Shower

Sooo awesome; Love to shower there. HOT water! Locally made products!

Iron/Ironing board/Blow Dryer

Top of your closet or kitchen.

HouseKeeper/Laundry

$100 Interim Cleaning during your stay  includes everything. Daily maid service $50 just straightening up. Laundry free! Call us or text please!

Dress

Very casual – no heels, jackets! I go to dinner w/no shoes! Just bring cover up for sun, breeze or bugs – BRING BUG SPRAY.

Beach Stuff

There are beach chairs under your house. Please bring all gear up from the beach. It can get washed away by the tide and you will be responsible for replacing it. Please see us to check out paddle board paddles, boogie boards, umbrellas and paddles for kayaks. Snorkels/fins in board hut!

Board Games/Puzzle/Cards

On the shelves in the closet or kitchen.

Books

If you have any that you finish, please feel free to add them to those we have. Leave magazines as well please!

The Beach

Remember there is no one to call if you get into trouble in the water. Dusk/dawn/no wind, the bugs come out so keep sprayed up!

Water Life

There are dolphins, turtles, sharks, rays and barracuda that we see from time to time but attacks are extremely rare. Stay out of the water if you have a cut or have your period. Jewelry is a fishing lure so best in the safe. With that said, relax and enjoy our beautiful water – it’s really ok. We go in everyday. The dolphins love to play! Sharks/turtles/rays flee, cudas spy!

“Lion Fish” have started to be seen around The Bahamas. They are VERY VERY poisonous usually only seen by rocky reefs. Avoid them. They have brown stripes w/a large fan-like mane. Delicious to eat!!

 Animal Life

The saying is “Eleuthera, it’s not for everyone”! On this magical island there are tarantulas, small scorpions & non-poisonous snakes (promise). The scorpions give you a bad sting but won’t really hurt you unless you’re highly allergic. The tarantulas and snakes won’t do a thing. The centipedes from what I understand are dangerous.

Plant Life

There is a tree called poison wood. It has black sap and a kind of reddish bark. If you touch it you will get blisters like poison ivy.

THE AMAZiNG BEACHES

Our Beach

Best Atlantic beach by far! Reefs for snorkeling/fishing (no spearguns)/kayaking/paddle boarding. If you see a few people, that’s a busy day….usually you have it all to yourself.  Some waves. Great long walk to your left- shorter to your right.

When you go to another beach, keep your valuables with you or leave in the safe. Some people here have nothing and it is best not to tempt them. At secluded beaches, leave the car unlocked so they know there are no valuables inside. Be Smart!

Twin Coves Beach

Gorgeous calm Atlantic beach w/great snorkeling. By car, left onto sandy beach road and straight for about 2 miles. Large rock house on your left, you can turn into a “parking area” about 200 feet before or after the house named “Twin Coves”. You can see it from your house deck!

Coco di Mama Beach

Gorgeous Caribbean beach. Right out Banana Beach gate about 4 miles towards GHB airport – pond/colored buildings on the left. Perfect sunset spot but use bug spray if there is no breeze! Very shallow water!

Old Club Med/French Leave Beach

Atlantic beach. Go into GH – left before Da Perk, up the hill, right at the stop sign. 1/3 mile past Bacchus take the dirt road on your left, turn, and  park.

Tippy’s Beach

Lunch/Dinner/bathroom, Atlantic beach. On the left, past Levy Preserve.

Ten Bay Beach

Pretty Caribbean beach. Pass GH & Palmetto Point, 5 min after Island Farm, 1 mile after the T intersection at Double Bay (huge electric box on right) turn right onto that dirt road. Stay right until road has “two lanes” and stay left. Quiet, no bathrooms. Not easy to find, check a map. For Double Bay beach, make the left at the huge electric box and a right onto Bank Road and go to the end and park.

SURFING

SURFER’S BEACH

Just before Gregory Town 25 minutes N. Usually heavy surf. Must be a very good swimmer. Take right hand turn by the playground, go right at the end, look for a veer left and take it, then another veer left, park to walk in. A hut for shade and a calm little part to your left on the beach.

Directions to Surfers Beach

From North, 2.0 miles south of Pam’s Island Made Gift Shop turn left at the large sign that says Surfer’s Beach Manor

From South, 5.9 miles north of Sunset Cove/Rainbow turn right at the large sign that says Surfer’s Beach Manor

From Surfer’s Beach Manor, at bottom of hill, T-junction, go left, sandy road on your right is the access road to Surfer’s Beach.

Food and Drink

There are three grocery stores in Governor’s Harbour – Burrows is on Queens Highway on the right after passing through half of Governor’s Harbour. They are open every day 7 am to 10 pm! The selection is American brands with lots of organics and gluten free. Beyond Meat! Breads are plentiful. Excellent bakery in Governor’s Harbour, past Burrows going south, go right then left then right! Their meat/fish/veggie patties available just before noon are fantastic. Great donuts!

There is a new gourmet specialty market/cafe if you make the left just before DaPerk and a right at the top of the hill then on your right – Bacchus Fine Foods – the best by far! 332-3111

We also have a larger market near ELH, North Eleuthera Shopping Center in Bluff – everything at US prices.

There are four liquor stores in Governor’s Harbour. The best is Bristol Cellars on Cupid’s Cay past the library – excellent selection of fine wines and liquors. Also next to Burrows.

Mama Anita’s Organic Farm by Cayo Loco  1 242 422-9261 Superb! At Office General!

South on Queens Highway past Palmetto Point is  Eleuthera Island Farm on the right. Fruit, vegetables, cheeses, farm eggs, meats! Tuesday/Friday fresh baked breads/cinnamon buns! Gifts! Great spot to stock up!

Fresh Seafood

All settlements have a fish dock for the catch of the day after 1 pm! They prepare the fish ready for you to cook!

If you catch fish yourself, please clean it on the beach (no discarding on the beach as it brings sharks) put the remains in your kitchen trash bag. Wrap all ‘after a fish dinner garbage’ before placing it in the kitchen garbage bag. The flies will still know it’s there so earlier disposal will help.

Best way to cook your lobster: microwave two minutes on one side, check, turn, rotate for another two minutes if needed and finish on the grill. Easiest clean up as well!

Gifts and Art

North (right out of gate) over the GLASS WINDOW BRIDGE, where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic. Very cool, but only stop in a safe place for photos…really hazardous part of the road. Go slow & carefully. Stay RIGHT at any type of fork. After you pass N. Eleuthera airport go 2 more minutes. Park. 5 min water taxi ride is $5 each. Runs all day and evenings.

When you get off the boat, ask around for a golf cart. Or if you like to walk, it’s a great small island with lots to see. You can cart around or cab it.
